SmartPros Salary Survey Results
February 2007
(SmartPros)
Respondents who participated in the recent SmartPros Salary Survey reported an average salary of $83,614. Most reported receiving bonuses in recent months, the vast majority have healthcare and retirement
plans through their employers, and more than two-thirds can receive continuing professional education reimbursement. However, 37 percent said they are looking for a new job.
Highlights:
- The majority of our survey respondents (70 percent) are in Corporate Accounting (37 percent) or Public Accounting (33 percent).
- The highest academic credential achieved by most is a Bachelor's degree (62 percent).
- Based on years of experience, entry level respondents reported an average salary of $44,506. In comparison, those with 10 to 15 years experience reported an average salary of $90,279.
- In our survey, there is a large, 44 percent pay gap between men and women. Men reported an average of $101,203 and women an average of $70,520.

- Twenty-seven percent of respondents have no license/certification, with an average salary of $53,402.
- Those in the Pacific region (Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington) reported the highest average salary, $95,933.
- Most respondents have received a bonus in the last 12 months, 67 percent of whom reported a bonus of 3 percent or more.
- Healthcare benefits are the most popular benefit offered by respondents' employers (92 percent), followed by retirement savings plans (88 percent), CPE reimbursement (68 percent) and flexible schedules (52 percent).
- Only 19 percent said their employer offers telecommuting, which the 2007 Salary Guide from Robert Half says is growing in popularity for accounting firms trying to attract talent.
- Thirty-seven percent of respondents said they are looking, or plan to look for, a new job in the next 12 months. There is a 25 percent pay gap between those looking for a new job ($72,137) and those not looking for a new job ($90,459).
- Twenty-one percent of respondents said their favorite aspect of their current position is "job responsibilities," followed by "work environment" (18 percent) and "employer/company" (18 percent). Only 12 percent said "salary/benefits."
