Strong Manager-Employee Relationship Key to Worker Satisfaction, Survey Finds Nov. 17, 2003 (SmartPros) Getting along with the boss is more important than pay or benefits when it comes to happiness at work, a new survey suggests. Forty-three percent of executives polled said employee job satisfaction is most impacted by one's relationship with his or her manager. Executives were asked, "Which one of the following would you say has the greatest impact on an employee's level of job satisfaction?" Their responses:
"Employees are most productive when they feel their contributions are valued and their feedback is welcomed by management,” said Max Messmer, chairman of Accountemps and author of Motivating Employees For Dummies® (John Wiley & Sons, Inc.). "The reverse is also true -- an unsupportive atmosphere can lead to reduced performance levels and higher turnover for businesses." Messmer offered managers five tips for building stronger relationships with their staff:
