(January 2000) This is the second segment of our interview with Bill McCready, the CEO and Founder of Venture Planning Associates, Inc. with offices in San Diego and Las Vegas. The firm provides venture capital and business finance consulting services to startups and high growth ventures, and conducts business with entrepreneurs and investors worldwide over the Internet. In the past year, their Web site, http://www.ventureplan.com, has generated traffic and deal flow from 88 countries. To succeed in today's business world, McCready suggests all entrepreneurs begin by hiring excellent legal counsel to handle any potential litigious pitfalls. "The best defense in most cases is a good offense."
Track 2
McCready stresses the need for entrepreneurs to better understand valuations. "It's a complicated process but when you talk to an investor you can tell them exactly what you're projecting for them and at the same time you know what the limitation of the stock that you can give for that particular investment so you wont give away too much."

McCready discusses some of the variables involved in choosing the right formation for your company. "It's simply a strategy...There are lots of different reasons, [as to] what the pluses and minuses are. That changes regularly because of the tax code and because of the legal environment."

McCready explains the "Angel Investor" network. "It'll probably surprise you to know that more than 80 percent of all investment in small start-up companies and even intermediate companies come from this group."

McCready discusses the services that Venture Planning Associates provides for entrepreneurs. "We bring the financial and deal structuring mechanism to a lot of start-up businesses. We like to be involved in three to five deals a year, that have national or international potential, with the potential to go public."
